Wolfenstein: The New Order Gets a Release Date and New Trailer; Pre-Orders Come With DOOM Beta Access

Wolfenstein: The New Order was announced just prior to E3 2013 and when gameplay was shown at E3, I was blown away. Developer MachineGames calls it a "story-driven, first-person, action-adventure" game, completely ignoring the "shooter" moniker you initially think of when you think Wolfenstein. It's still a shooter at heart, but unlike the run-and-gun style of the original Wolfenstein games, this one will actually feature a compelling story. That's why I named The New Order my Best Shooter of E3 2013.

Today, publisher Bethesda Softworks finally announced a release date, accompanied by an exceptional gameplay trailer, entitled "BOOM BOOM." The New Order will be launching in North America on May 20, 2014 and in Europe on May 23, 2014; coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Pre-ordering the game grants you access to the DOOM beta (previously referred to as Doom 4) – yes, the game that has been in development limbo since its original 2008 announcement.

As of now, it seems the only way to get a DOOM beta key is via a physical retail purchase, but hopefully that changes once digital pre-orders go live. It's also important to note that the DOOM beta will not begin on May 20, but rather "a later, yet-to-be announced date." That being said, hopefully this means that DOOM will at least be ready to be shown at E3 2014. Both The New Order and DOOM use an updated version of the id Tech 5 engine, last seen in the highly underrated RAGE.

Enjoy the BOOM BOOM trailer below, and if you want to see why I was so excited after E3, check out GameSpot's E3 2013 Stage Demo.

Of all the video game movies I have seen the one I would love to see most would be a Wolfenstein one. Surely I am not the only one.

I never really thought about it before, but I can totally see it. Even though the games have often just been popcorn shooters, there really is quite the backstory that can be turned into a pretty awesome movie.
