Music is Your Weapon in Multiplayer First-Person Shooter Chroma

Harmonix Music Systems, the studio behind Rock Band and Dance Central, is teaming up with Hidden Path Entertainment (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Defense Grid: The Awakening) to bring PC gamers a "free-to-play, music-driven, first-person, multiplayer shooter" called Chroma. Developed using the Unreal engine, music drives everything from the combat to the terrain.

Chroma is a team-based shooter, where you're fighting over control of The Signal, and features multiple classes, "each with their own unique musical gameplay mechanics and perks." Your weapon load-out affects what kind of sound and music you unleash with your attacks. In addition, major musical moments during the match dramatically alter the terrain in sync with the music. These moments, referred to as "Change Ups," can change anything from adding cover to creating sniper towers.

Harmonix is currently accepting applications for a limited Closed Alpha test, but Chroma will eventually launch on Steam at some point this year as a free-to-play title. The screenshots below show virbant, colorful environments and attacks, and while the announcement trailer does not feature actual in-game footage, it certainly provides an interesting taste of what we can expect. It's a unique premise that could be pretty awesome if Harmonix and Hidden Path can pull it off.
