HAWKEN Gets an Official Launch Trailer as it Arrives on Steam Early Access
Last week, Adhesive Games announced that it was transitioning its mech-combat game HAWKEN to Steam. HAWKEN has finally launched on Steam, but curiously not as a "regular" release, but rather as Early Access. That normally wouldn't be a problem except that Adhesive is blocking all new players from accessing the game unless they buy a $29.99 USD Nemesis Bundle, which contains nine mechs and a bunch of other goodies. However, anybody with an existing account has been emailed a Steam key to redeem and access the game for free.
This is a rather questionable move considering the game is supposed to be free-to-play and still will be once it exits Early Access. No word on just how long Early Access will last, but the official reasoning for the decision to require a purchase was that Adhesive "felt this was necessary to help control [the] server load and offer the very best experience possible to all players." I guess that sounds better than simply saying, "we want money." Not surprisingly, Steam users are up in arms. Hopefully Adhesive didn't just shoot itself in the foot, hurting the long term prospect of the game.
