After years of research and development conducted by the United States Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, has announced that the administration will implement vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The technology will enable vehicles to communicate with one another and share information such as speed, direction, and relative position. The technology will initially be introduced in light vehicles, according to NHTSA. The statistical information will be shared between automobiles 10 times per second, allowing vehicles to theoretically sense the probability of a crash and warn drivers in order to avoid an accident. Research completed by the United States Department of Transportation estimates that vehicle-to-vehicle technology helps drivers mitigate 70 to 80 percent of automobile accidents that involve unimpaired operators.

Although the technology will be implemented in the future and will begin with light vehicles, no timeframe regarding the integration has been announced by DOT or NHTSA.
