Gamespot has put together a step by step guide to installing the Steam OS on your own PC, along with some performance numbers of a PC they used for the build. The PC used in the test featured an Ivy Bridge based i5 CPU, 8GB of DDR3, an AMD R9 290X, and NVIDIA GTX 670. The team went through the full install process instead of the quicker and more painless restoration install to provide as much detail as possible. The machine was dual booted with Windows 7 with tests conducted on Dota 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Metro: Last Light. When paired with the NVIDIA card, performance under Steam OS was comparable to Windows 7 at 1080p resolutions, while the AMD card didn't do as well.
