Facebook Using Blu-ray for Long Term Storage
Facebook VP of Engineering Jay Parikh presented a storage prototype at the Open Compute Summit that is built around Blu-ray discs. The prototype packs 10,000 discs into a single cabinet to provide one petabyte of storage, with plans in place to increase the total storage to five petabytes per cabinet. Storage costs would be decreased up to 50% and energy consumption could be decreased by up to 80%. The discs would also provide a longer shelf life than conventional hard drives, lasting up to 50 years. Facebook already has a data center using the prototype with 30 petabytes being stored and plans to get up to 150 petabytes within a few months.
