Although Spotify users within the United States have been able to listen to music in an unlimited fashion through the Spotify web client, users in many other countries were unable to say the same. Some of these users, depending on the country that they resided in, were limited to 2.5 hours of listening per week after a six-month trial was over. Spotify has now dumped this limitation, allowing all users of the streaming service to listen to as much music as they desire, albeit through the web client with advertisements included. Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, has revealed that through a combination of advertisements and converting freemium users into paying customers, the company was able to eliminate the time limits previously imposed.
The announcement from Spotify comes less than a week before the new Beats Music service is set to launch, which will only allow a limited free trial to potential customers and no free listening option after the trial expires.
