Many of us will associate PCI Express slots with video cards, as that is what we typically install in them so we can play the latest and greatest game at maximum settings. For many professionals though, high-performance storage is critical, which is why the people at HighPoint Technologies have developed the RocketRAID 2720C2.
Thanks to the bandwidth of PCIe 2.0 x8 lanes, this new solution can deliver 4.0 GB/s speeds from 16-disk RAID arrays, by using two of the cards connected with Cross-Sync. Of course you may not have that many disks lying around, but with Online Capacity Expansion (OCE) you can expand an array across additional disks without losing data. Cross-Sync allows enables administrators to change the RAID configuration to best fit the situation, using Online RAID Level Migration (ORLE). That means you can start with a RAID 0 array for performance and later convert it to a RAID 5 or 6, which offers redundancy.
The RocketEAID 2120C2 is currently available, for anyone looking to build a massive RAID array, at an MSRP of $400. You can find out more at HighPoint's website: RocketRAID 2720C2 Series
