2014 will be the year that DDR4 will slowly start to make its entrance. First to servers and then sometime in 2015 or 2016, it will start to make its way into consumer PCs. And of course mobile devices will not be left out as it is one of the biggests markets for DRAM. Samsung knows this and has therefore developed the industry's first eight gigabit, low power DDR4 (LPDDR4) DRAM. Executive vice president Young-Hyun Jun puts it like this, "This next-generation LPDDR4 DRAM will contribute significantly to faster growth of the global mobile DRAM market, which will soon comprise the largest share of the entire DRAM market."

The 8 Gb LPDDR4 is fabricated on 20 nm process technology. It currently allows up to 1 GB on a single die, which is the highest density available for DRAM today. Furthermore, the new LPDDR4 DRAM will use Low Voltage Swing Terminated Logic (LVSTL) I/O interface to allow for a data tranfer rate twice that of current LPDDR3 DRAM. All in all, the new LPDDR4 interface will provide 50 percent better performance than current LPDDR3 or DDR3 memory. Bear in mind that this is done while consuming roughly 40 percent less power at only 1.1 V.
