Hollywood Photo Enhancement Technique Becomes Reality

Category: Science & Technology
Posted: 05:51PM

I remember a comedy named Mais qui a tué Pamela Rose? where FBI agents managed to identify a criminal using a photo of the victim. They zoomed into the victim's eye and extracted the reflected image of the criminal. Since it was a comedy I laughed, but it is not funny anymore. Researchers at the University of Glasgow took the photo of a subject, zoomed into the subject's eye in the photo, and by processing the reflections in the eye extracted a small image of a bystander. Size of the extracted image was only 36x56 pixels, but it was good enough for others to recognize the bystander. Although the experiment was done under an ideal lab environment using a 39-megapixel camera and perfect lighting, it is enough evidence to prove the possibility of this Hollywood technology. In addition to criminal investigation, this technology can be used to reproduce 3D environments when extracting images from both eyes.
