Amazon Limits Prime Memberships and Issues Shipping Refunds
Setting a new record this year on Cyber Monday by selling 36.8 million items globally, the online retail giant Amazon had difficulties with recent holiday season orders. Amazon had to limit Prime memberships during the holiday season so that current members would not be affected by a surge of order shipments. If too many new memberships were purchased and customers made use of the two day shipping option, one of the many perks of Prime membership, current members may have possibly had orders delayed. Although Amazon attempted to keep orders arriving by their guaranteed date, UPS and FedEx were unable to deliver packages by the Christmas deadline. Both shipping companies blamed inclement weather and overloaded systems for delayed package delivery, and Amazon has stated that it will review carrier performance.
For orders that were guaranteed to have been received by Christmas and were not, Amazon is refunding shipping charges for late packages and also issuing a $20 Amazon gift card for the inconvenience.
