Currently the Apple iPhone holds the fifth place slot within China in terms of market share. The technology giant is hoping to increase its share of the iPhone within China by partnering with China Mobile, which is China’s largest telecom. China Mobile, which currently has about 760 million customers, will begin offering the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S to customers starting January 17, 2014. Pricing is an issue that both entities will tread lightly upon however with final figures being announced at a later time. Within China, mobile customers do not receive any subsidized pricing when purchasing a new device. Due to Apple’s lower end iPhone, the iPhone 5C which costs $550 off-contract, both companies will have to be careful to price the mobile phones so that they appeal to customers. Apple plans to sell about 15 million to 20 million more iPhones in China from this exclusive deal with China Mobile. The additional sales will hopefully be fueled by the 4G LTE rollout that is being made by China Mobile; Apple’s latest iPhones support both 3G and 4G standards.
