In the past, BlackBerry devices were both developed and manufactured by the wireless phone company. Today however, BlackBerry has announced that it will continue to focus on software for its mobile handsets and entrust Foxconn with manufacturing the cellular devices. John Chen, Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer at BlackBerry, stated that the move is geared towards lowering the financial risk of the company and producing better BlackBerry 10 devices. The deal allows BlackBerry to pay Foxconn directly for manufacturing costs while BlackBerry receives the revenue from device sales. However, if revenue surpasses an unspecified amount, Foxconn is able to receive some of the extra income as well.

BlackBerry’s first device to be produced by Foxconn will be a 3G capable BlackBerry 10 cellular phone that will initially be released in Indonesia during March of next year, though the handset will make its way into six or seven other markets later. Foxconn will produce BlackBerry devices at its facilities in both Indonesia and Mexico.
