Starting November 27 and ending on December 15, over 40 million credit and debit card accounts have potentially been impacted due to a data breach at Target stores. Executives at Target alerted proper authorities and financial institutions after being made aware of the situation, though no timeframe of acknowledgement was announced. Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and chief executive officer at Target, has stated that the company is working closely with law enforcement to bring justice to the individuals responsible for this crime. Target is also partnering with an unknown third-party forensics team to conduct a proper investigation of the security breach in hopes of attaining more information about the act. While it is not known how many of the 40 million credit and debit cards are actually affected, the security breach has occurred in nearly every Target store through the United States; online was not affected.
