YouTube has been unavailable on Roku systems for years now, even though the online video service has been available on many competitors' set-top steaming boxes. Today marks a new era in Roku content availability however, as Ed Lee, the vice president of content acquisition at Roku, announced YouTube availability for its new Roku 3 hardware via the company blog. The addition of YouTube on the set-top box brings HD streaming, access to channel subscriptions, and a feature dubbed “Send to TV”, which allows a smartphone and television to be synced together. The YouTube application can currently be downloaded through the Roku store for users residing within Canada, Republic of Ireland, the United States, and United Kingdom. Older Roku models are expected to receive the YouTube application sometime within the next year.
