AMD held a GPU 14 Tech Day Event in Hawaii earlier today, where it debuted new graphics cards based on its Graphics Core Next architecture. The new cards have the Volcanic Islands codename and use the Hawaii GPU, which is precisely why AMD held the event in the 50th state aboard the USS Missouri. There are two series of cards being introduced today, with the R9 targeted at performance gamers and the R7 for the more budget-minded gamers. It's an entirely new naming structure we'll have to get use to, so just bear with us. The R9 290X is the flagship card, which has 2816 SPs, 44 ROPs, and 176 TMUs on a 512-bit bus. A staggering 4GB of GDDR5 RAM is also on the R9 290X, which combines with the 512-bit bus for more than 300GB/s of bandwidth. Display outputs including two DVI ports, one HDMI, and one DisplayPort. Power requirements for it are a 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe cable, since there's a rather high 270W TDP (or even 300W).

To go along with the R9 290X, there's the R9 280X, R9 270X, R7 260X, and R7 250. The 280X has 3GB of GDDR5 RAM and is priced at $299; the 270X and 260X both feature 2GB of RAM, with the 270X priced at $199 and the 260X at $139; and the 250 has 1GB of RAM and costs a mere $89. As for the flagship 290X, well, be prepared to shell out $599 for it. There's also an R9 290 for $449, but there aren't any official specifications beyond 4GB of RAM and a 512-bit bus. Everything but the R9 290 is due to arrive next month, with the R9 290X also featuring a Battlefield 4 bundle that'll be available to pre-order on October 3.
