Earlier today Google made multiple announcements for hardware and software, including some that were expected and some that were not. In the expected column is an update to the mobile OS Android; Jelly Bean 4.3. This update represents more of a refresh for the operating system, but does bring support for new APIs, new Bluetooth technologies, and restricted profiles with built in parental controls.

On the hardware front, and still in the expected column, is the new Nexus 7 tablet. As rumors and hopes have been suggesting, the new tablet keeps the seven inch screen, but ups the resolution to 1920x1200, given it a pixel per inch spec of 323. This makes it the highest resolution seven inch screen available. Beneath the pixels is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, sporting four cores running at 1.5 GHz, with 2 GB of RAM at its disposal. It appears the number of pre-orders has already been reached, but when available again the 16 GB, Wi-Fi model is $229 while the 32 GB Wi-Fi version is $269. A US-only LTE version was also announced but is not yet available through the Google Play Store.

One more piece of hardware was also announced, and at least I cannot recall any rumors about it. Chromecast looks like a USB drive, but instead of having a male USB plug on it, there is a male HDMI plug. Connect it to a television and the next time you are watching something through Google Play, YouTube, Netflix, or Chrome, you can press a button in the application and send it to your TV. The Chromecast dongle costs just $35 from the Play store, or at least it will once it is back in stock.
