Sony Shows Off PlayStation 4 Hardware and Prices it at $399; Comes with 500GB Hard Drive

When Sony unveiled its PlayStation 4 back in February, it showed off pretty much every hardware except one: the actual console. It left us wondering just what the PS4 looked like, but luckily Sony didn't keep us waiting for too long. E3 officially kicked off earlier in the day, and during Sony's press conference it finally gave us the look at the PS4. The system looks to be kind of a cross between the PS2 and the PS3, with an angular style, mostly matte finish, and a blue ribbon reminiscent of the PS2. It has a glossy part over one section to echo the PS3, and also slightly the gloss/matte two-tone nature of Microsoft's Xbox One. Like its past consoles, Sony designed the PS4 to lay either horizontally or vertically, with a snazzy little stand included for the latter configuration. It's a little hard to tell just how big the system is, but if it's a little smaller than the original PS3 I think we'll all be happy.

A few more specifications came out after Sony's press conference ended, including the size of the PS4's hard drive. It comes in at 500GB, which may be a little less than some people were hoping for. At least it matches the Xbox One's hard drive size, so there is that. It also includes two USB 3.0 ports on the front, and HDMI, Ethernet, Optical, and an AUX port on the rear. The AUX port is for the PlayStation Eye, which doesn't come with the console but can be purchased for $59 extra. Sony includes an HDMI cable, USB cable, power cord, controller, and a mono headset with every PS4, while additional DualShock 4 controllers are $59.

Along with the look at the console, Sony also revealed the price of the PlayStation 4. It comes in at $399 in the U.S., €399 in Europe, £349 in the U.K., and $549 in Australia. Yes, the PS4 is a full $100 less (depending on region) than the Xbox One. The PS4's exact launch date is still unknown, but you can be sure it won't remain that way for long.
