Development of Blizzard's Titan MMO is Starting Over
Though technically unannounced, it has been known for quite some time that Blizzard has been working on a new MMO, codenamed Titan. In fact, development had supposedly been going on for roughly five years. Well it now seems like the last five years of work was all for naught – Blizzard has apparently hit the restart button. The 100-person team that had been working on Titan has been reduced to just 30, with the other 70 being reassigned to other work. This core 30 will now start over and as a result, the estimated release date has been pushed back to 2016 at the earliest.
According to GamesBeat, Blizzard recently reviewed Titan and realized it didn't meet the expectations and quality expected of games today, both from a design standpoint and a technology standpoint. Blizzard is notorious for taking its sweet time developing and honing its games until they're perfect (at least in the company's eyes) and the company also has no problem canceling projects entirely (StarCraft: Ghost could have been amazing). So really, I guess this news shouldn't be completely surprising, and at least Titan is still planned – whatever the hell it may be. But the MMO landscape has certainly changed in the past five years, so I think Blizzard has done the right thing here.
If you have visited the forums over the past week, you may have noticed that many OCCers (myself included) are now playing free-to-play (F2P) MMO Neverwinter. In my opinion, it's the best looking and most polished F2P-from-the-start MMO I've seen to date. And with RIFT going F2P in a couple weeks and The Elder Scrolls Online on the horizon (pricing model unannounced), it's no wonder that Blizzard is rethinking how it handles the MMO genre with Titan. Blizzard may still hold the surpreme MMO leader with World of Warcraft, but the times are a changing.
