If you're a fan of Google Reader to handle your RSS feeds, you better start looking for alternatives pretty quick. The folks in Mountain View announced Google Reader and seven other services are being retired this year so the company can better focus on fewer products. When all is said and done, it'll bring Google's total number of closed services/features since 2011 to 70, which is all part of CEO Larry Page's goal to streamline the tech giant. Joining Google Reader are Building Maker (used for 3D buildings in Maps and Earth), Cloud Connect, Apps Script's GUI builder and five UiApp widgets (though Apps Script itself is staying), Search API for shopping, and CalDAV API. Google will also no longer sell or provide updates for Snapseed Desktop for Mac and Windows, plus BlackBerry's Google Voice app is officially shelved.

Google Reader will stay active until July 1, Building Maker until June 1 (users can still export and access files in 3D Warehouse), Cloud Connect on April 30 (users encouraged to change to Google Drive), while GUI Builder and its five UiApp widgets, Search API, and CalDAV API are all getting the ax on September 16. BlackBerry's Google Voice app gets cut starting next week, but Google recommends checking out the HTML5 version if BB users still want to use Voice. Lastly, Snapseed Desktop for Mac and Windows is gone as of today, though current customers can still download it, while the Android and iOS versions aren't affected at all.

What I'll really miss when it's gone is iGoogle. That for me is the perfect way to follow RSS. I have no idea what I'll be replacing it with.
