With the recent unveiling of televisions featuring extremely high definition picture, such as 4K resolutions, the amount of video data required to display them will continue to increase. All of that extra data will need an efficient method of storage and transmission to fully take advantage of it. The H.265 video codec was just approved and could allow 1080p video streams to use half the amount of bandwidth that is currently used. The combination of this new codec and increasing broadband speeds could eventually lead to the ability to stream video with 4K quality resolution over the Internet.
