Blizzard Entertainment is planning to make an announcement regarding a Linux based game sometime this year. This adds Blizzard to a list of several major gaming companies that are breaking into the Linux market, with the charge led by Valve. Blizzard already has a native Linux client for World of Warcraft that it maintains internally, but the game runs fine in Wine on Linux and the company has been unable to decide on targeting a specific distribution of the operating system. When questioned about a Linux port of Diablo 3 last year, a Blizzard employee responded "I know we actually have a lot of stuff that we... like a lot of our server stuff actually uses Linux, so I don’t think that it would be outrageous, but I think that we’d have to see that there’d be a demand for it. And then we’d have to see that that demand would be worth the time we take away from the other things that we could do." As someone who prefers Linux to Windows, any news that involves gaming on Linux is important to me and I will be following this closely.
