The video game industry is a very interesting industry as we see large franchises from big publishers renew themselves every year or so while smaller, fresher IPs are created by independent developers. Of course indie developers will also create their own franchises and publishers will invest in new ideas, but behind them all are people designing the games. That may not last too much longer though thanks to researchers at Imperial College London who have designed an AI with the ability to generate games like a human.
'A Novel Game-Evolving Labrat I've Named Angelina,' or ANGELINA is an artificially intelligent program that was created to show how creative computers can be. It generates games by first constructing a level from randomly placed objects. It then runs through these levels and ranks their difficulty. These parent levels are then combined into child levels that are tested and ranked to be combined into another generation of levels. To make sure the levels can be completed the researchers also created Mechanic Miner, a module for ANGELINA, which examines the code for the levels and devises a mechanic to suit the level.
So far ANGELINA has created eight games, which can be downloaded at her website, including A Puzzling Present. This Christmas-themed game is available for multiple operating systems, including Android, and can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.
