Valve has previously remained tight-lipped about rumours surrounding the software company's supposed plans to build what's being dubbed as the Steam Box, but apparently the company might be pushing ahead with it. Valve's very own PC for your den (which may very well compete against the likes of living room staples such as the Xbox 360 and PS3) was discussed at some length by Gabe Newell during an interview at the VGAs. Newell noted that the unexepectedly strong consumer response to its TV-centric Big Picture and the strides it made with Linux prompted the possibility of a living-room friendly PC package.

The Valve co-founder hinted that a version of the Steam Box or a similar contraption could be available by next year. "We’ll do it but we also think other people will as well," he said. But Valve's hardware project may not exactly be the kind of PC that most enthusiasts are used to tinkering with. "Certainly our hardware will be a very controlled environment," Newell said. "If you want more flexibility, you can always buy a more general purpose PC," he added. Now that Valve has confirmed its plans to take over our living room, just how much of a PC is the Steam Box?
