Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller is a point-and-click murder mystery adventure that follows Erica Reed, a FBI agent with the unique ability of post-cognition, able to see an object's past with just one touch. Point-and-click adventures have seen a resurgence in recent years and just last night, The Walking Dead: The Game won Game of the Year at the Spike Video Game Awards. What makes today's point-and-click adventures such a success is not so much their puzzles, but rather their narrative. Cognition promises an engrossing story told over four episodes, with Jane Jensen, the mastermind behind the popular Gabriel Knight series, acting as Story Consultant. Choices will matter, with branching narratives, though it is unclear how many of your decisions will affect subsequent episodes.
Aside from the narrative, Cognition is fully voiced and all the graphics are hand-drawn in a graphic novel style, which seems to fit well with the detective premise. The game is definitely for mature audiences, with plenty of blood, violence, and foul language. There is a demo available that allows you to play the beginning section of Episode 1: The Hangman, which seems to act as a prologue to the rest of the episode and series. When you conclude the demo, you're greeted with an opening credits music video of sorts - think James Bond movies. In just the short time involved with the demo, I felt engaged and emotionally drawn in, so I highly recommend downloading it and trying it for yourself, though it is a bit hefty at just over 400MB, so you can always just take my word for it and upvote this on Greenlight. Each episode is estimated to take 4-8 hours to complete, with pricing somewhere around $10/episode or $30 for the full season. Watch the trailer below and check out the Greenlight page for two more videos and some screenshots.
