Current generation games consoles have had a surprisingly long life with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the original Wii being released in 2006. The first of the trio, the Wii, has recently been superseded by the Wii U, and the next generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles are expected to be just around the corner. Details have been released that reveal Microsoft are planning to release the next-generation Xbox, dubbed the Xbox 720, at the beginning of the 2013 holiday season, so we can expect the next generation PlayStation to be released around the same time.
Despite this, we still haven't heard from Microsoft or Sony with any confirmation about the specs of the consoles, aside from a number of rumors. It is currently unclear as to whether Microsoft or Sony plan to formally announce theconsoles at E3 2013 or at a separate launch events, but we expect that information to be released in the near future.
