Intel has been in the news some recently, but this time the story is a little different. The chipmaker has acquired ZiiLABS, a subsidiary of Creative Technlogy, for $50 million. ZiiLABS specializes in system on chip (SoC) technology for tablets and smartphones, especially for Android devices with the ZMS-20 and ZMS-40. According to Creative, $30 million of the deal is for engineering resources and assets to bring ZiiLABS into Intel's fold, while the remaining $20m is for patent licenses. It's believed Intel will use ZiiLABS' GPU technology in Atom chipsets for 2014 and beyond instead of Imagination Technology's PowerVR graphics core. That part remains to be seen, but ZiiLABS' GPU tech has support for OpenCL, which is something Intel is starting to integrate in its GPUs.
