Xbox 360 Tops US Market 22 Months in a Row
Research firm NPD have announced that the Microsoft Xbox 360 has topped the US console market for the 22nd consecutive month, with 56% of the US market share. This places the console in good stead for the upcoming Christmas season, despite the gaming market being particularly weak at the hands of the smartphone and tablet market in recent times.
The NPD October analytics highlights that there have been over 270,000 Xbox 360 consoles shipped over the month, with the total income from consoles, games, and accessories generating over $315 million in gross revenue, before tax and expenses deducted. Consumers also spent more money on the Xbox 360 than both the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii combined. This may have been partly due to the fact Microsoft has begun marketing the platform as a home media center as well as a games console, through software releases like Xbox Music.
These statistics have been positively received by the Official Microsoft Blog especially considering the recent games industry decline, with hardware sales plummeting by 37% since this time last year. There are hopes that this will change in the run up to Christmas with numerous AAA games as well as the Wii U slated for release later this month.
