According to a Strategy Analytics report published today, Samsung has taken the lead in the race for the world’s best selling smartphone, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 clocking up an amazing 18 million units shipped in Q3, with the iPhone 4S taking second place shipping 16.2 million units. This gives the Galaxy S3 a massive 11% of the smartphone market share last quarter, while the iPhone 5 is left with approximately 9.5% of the total smartphone market share.
This may be a hollow victory for Samsung fans, as Strategy Analytics senior analyst pointed out, consumers have been put off buying the iPhone 4S in lieu of the release of the iPhone 5 in early Q4, which is expected to be the Galaxy S3's main competitor during this quarter. According to Apple, 6 million iPhone 5 units have already been shipped, despite suppliers being unable to keep up with demand in certain cases. The Galaxy S3 still has the advantage of being slightly cheaper than the iPhone 5, particularly on contracts, yet it will be interesting to see whether this is enough to put consumers off of Apple during Q4.
