Some potentially troublesome news for those in the affected areas, but Barnes & Noble has revealed 63 of its stores have been the victim of PIN pad tampering. The book giant did an internal investigation of its nearly 700 locations and discovered that one PIN pad in 63 of its stores has been tampered with. As Barnes & Noble puts it, the tampering is "a sophisticated criminal effort to steal credit card information, debit card information, and debit card PIN numbers." A bug was planted in the affected devices to grab customer credit card and PIN numbers. B&N is currently working with federal authorities to get to the bottom of everything, and warns customers to change their PIN numbers if they used a debit card at one of the locations, as well as monitor their bank statements for any suspicious activity.
The company has disconnected all PIN pads as of September 14 and is only processing credit cards through the register, so if you've wondered why that's happened, there you go. Barnes & Noble states the tampering only affects those specific stores and not any online, Nook, or Nook mobile app purchases, nor at any College Bookstores. Certain stores in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island, with a full list available at the source.
