When Xbox 360 owners turn on their consoles today, they'll be greeted by the new Xbox Music service. Everyone else will be able to enjoy the service when it rolls out with Windows 8 on October 26. But what is Xbox Music exactly? Well, it's Microsoft's all-in-one music service that is "specially designed to let users listen to music in exactly the way they want." The service incorporates a free streaming part, a subscription part, and a purchase part to let anyone listen to music however they want. Microsoft says Xbox Music will have over 30 million songs, which is a pretty staggering number, and users can listen on their Xbox 360, Windows 8 PC, tablet, or phone.
Xbox Music is the new default music player for Windows 8 systems, and it includes free, ad-supported streaming, along with playlist creation, the ability to search for new music, and even purchase music. A $9.99/month subscription lets users have their music in the cloud, which can then be played on any other Windows 8 device or Xbox 360 after signing in. Eventually Xbox Music will be on Android and iOS systems, but right now is exclusive to Windows 8. There is no mention of Windows 7, so odds are everyone still on that OS will need to upgrade to W8 or check out any of the other music streaming options.
