Have you ever known a person who talks with their hands, and I do not mean with sign language? Well thanks to researchers at Newcastle University and Microsoft Research Cambridge we may soon be able to answer phone calls, play games, and more with the motions of our hands in free-space.

The technology, aptly named 'Digits' is a wrist-worn device that tracks and models the motions of your hand and fingers with infrared light and an inertial-measurement unit track. All of this is accomplished in real-time and without any equipment except what is on the user's wrist. Accomplishing this was quite tricky as the mathematical models at first would break down and collapse, but after completely reworking and simplifying them, the technology worked, and worked well.

Unfortunately, as cool as the technology may be, it was not designed for general use. Instead, Digits represents a proof-of-concept technology that may eventually be developed into a proper interface device.
