Notch Refuses to Submit Minecraft for Windows 8 Certification

Much has been made about Windows 8 and everything Microsoft seems to be doing to alienate the desktop PC user. A list of Windows 8 games was unveiled earlier this month, and while there are some notable names, the majority are ones you would play on your smartphone to pass the time. Over the past 24 hours or so, Markus "Notch" Persson revealed on Twitter that Microsoft emailed him to help "certify" Minecraft for Windows 8. Notch is not having any of that, however, as he told Microsoft to "stop trying to ruin the pc as an open platform." He also would rather not have Minecraft run on Windows 8 than "play along," and hopefully that will convince people to not switch to W8. Notch's refusal is not surprising in the least, but it seems his statements are not sitting well with everyone. I think it's commendable for him to stand up in what he believes, and maybe show the folks in Redmond how people are not happy with the changes to W8.

Notch has become a whiny, self-righteous asshole. He needs to get over himself.

I can see microsoft being annoying in this manner. To be certified you have to run in the metro style. The only way to be in the metro style, you have to be installed through the window's app store. So they're asking him to work on his game to let them sell it, when it already works fine in desktop mode. I'd tell them to piss off too.

I think it's more about sending the message. Windows 8 is going to fail miserably. Even Valve sees it coming http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/steamd-penguins/ and http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/07/steams-newell-windows-8-catastrophe-driving-valve-to-embrace-linux/
