Researchers at Hitachi have demonstrated the ability to use glass as a storage medium. The team used a 2cm square that is only 2mm thick to successfully store 40MB of data per square inch by using lasers to etch binary data on the glass. As the technology matures, it should be able to provide even greater storage density. The main focus of this research is the fact that glass will be able to hold up to nearly all potential hazards other than blunt force. The glass was tested against heat up to 1,000° Celsius for two hours and no damage was done. This research could potentially lead to the development of new long term storage mediums that would replace current options such as magnetic tape.
