Torchlight II has finally been released, and anyone with even a passing interest in hack-and-slash RPGs should find something enjoyable in Runic's sequel. But the developers also have cash-strapped gamers in mind, as the much-awaited RPG follow-up sells for an affordable price of $20. Those who'd like to try out the game can thankfully play around with the demo too. When asked about Torchlight II's cheap barrier to entry, Runic's Max Schaefer had this to say: "We sell for $20 because we want a bigger community, and for people all over the world to enjoy our game. Not everyone has $60 lying around."
Schaefer adds that digital distribution also made it economically possible to lessen the price. The Runic team also thought that an inexpensive game with tolerable DRM would help combat the threat of piracy. "Being nice and transparent about what we do, and charging a reasonable price, seems like the most effective way to convince people to buy our stuff. That, and a demo. I mean, we have DRM. But it’s not super-draconian," said co-founder Travis Baldree. To top it all off, extra content will also be released for Torchlight II, for free. "The current plan is to do a few free things that we’ll release to everyone over the coming months – a pet, some new items, a random map set, and things like that."
