Introducing Project Eternity - New RPG From Obsidian Entertainment Appears on Kickstarter

All week long Obsidian Entertainment had been teasing a new game known only as Project X. Every day this week a new image appeared on a landing page with a rather cryptic message below an ouroboros. An ouroboros is an ancient symbol for eternity, as it is a dragon eating its own tail in a neverending cycle. The source code on the landing page included an additional message along with a hidden word that was slowly being revealed. Some members of the Obsidian forums speculated the word would be Eternity, and today Obsidian have taken the wraps off it. Project Eternity has appeared on Kickstarter, and it is a brand-new RPG project from Obsidian. The game seeks to combine the best elements of Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment into something totally new, but the developer needs our help.

The Kickstarter goal for Project Eternity (working title) is a hefty $1,100,000, which is quite a bit higher than many other video game projects on the crowd-funding site. Obsidian says the amount is necessary because everything about Project Eternity is being built from scratch, from the RPG system to art, characters, animation, dialog, lore, and plenty more. Several other Kickstarter games have far exceeded $1.1 million, so hopefully Obsidian can do so with ease.

Project Eternity will be an isometric, party-based RPG with pausable real-time battles. You can position your group, coordinate attacks, and watch how it all comes together. We create our own characters to get things started and can pick up a variety of new party members along the way, with the hope of going on adventures rather than play through a story. Dialog choices will be deep and carry meaning, as they can affect the fate of your entire party. Obsidian plans to explore mature themes with "complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out."

Everything about Project Eternity sounds like a blast, but Obsidian needs our help to make it come true. We have 32 days to raise the $1.1 million, and there are plenty of rewards at various tiers. Pledges of $25 or more nets you a copy of the game via Steam, but the first 25,000 backers can get in on the $20 early-bird tier to get the game. The rewards and tiers go up from there, with digital soundtracks and artbooks, a physical copy of the game, a cloth map, user-created and named NPCs, exclusive items, and even a chance to meet the developers at Obsidian. Any pledge you can offer will be appreciated by the development team, so get out there and support it!
