Last summer, one of the most elusive pieces of vaporware actually released, when Gearbox Software shipped Duke Nukem Forever. The decade long development limbo of DNF is well known, but it appears that will not be the last Duke appearance. In a recent interview, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said he is interested in making another Duke Nukem game, as a goal of his is to build a Duke Nukem game. The studio acquired the rights to Duke Nukem in 2010, but Pitchford said that was not done just to finally ship DNF.
I willingly and lovingly acquired the brand. When I did that, I wasn’t thinking that the only goal is just to make sure everyone could play Duke Nukem Forever. The real goal for me is I’d like to build a Duke Nukem game again.
I think what I would do and what Gearbox would do would be a little different [than Duke Nukem Forever]. I think it would be amazing, and I look forward to that.
A Duke Nukem game built from the ground up by Gearbox? Certainly sounds like a recipe for success, especially given the studio's history. Hopefully Pitchford gets his wish, and that the next Duke game gets here a little earlier than the last one.
