Valve Corporation has been leading the pack in digital distribution and making games that people play for hours on end, and has apparently been so successful at it that Electronic Arts was willing to shell out $1 billion to add the burgeoning PC developer into its portfolio of acquisitions. So stated a New York Times article, which indicated that EA had been trying for years to lure Valve, which would have resulted in a deal worth $1 billion if negotiations had favored in the game publisher's direction. The sources were credited to an anonymous pair with close ties to EA's interest in Valve. Fortunately for the good of the PC industry, it was unlikely to have progressed further as Gable Newell stressed that Valve would "disintegrate" the moment the reins were handed over to another company. Newell also added that "it's way more likely we would head in that direction than say, 'Let's find some giant company that wants to cash us out and wait two or three years to have our employment agreements terminate."
