Naval warfare is a new addition for the Assassin's Creed series, and gamers the world over will get to experience it later this year in Assassin's Creed III. A new commentary video has landed that gives us all a better look at the game's naval warfare, with creative director Alex Hutchinson providing the narration. The Revolutionary War, which is the setting for AC3, was not fought just on land as the seas played a crucial role throughout the war. Connor, the new protagonist, is master and commander of a ship, which means he is in control of the ship's navigation and guns. A dynamic weather system has been added by Ubisoft that can cause rough seas and massive storms to appear out of no where. Firing a ship's cannon while the sea is rolling beneath her requires careful consideration, as a wrong angle can cause a cannonball to miss the target. Three types of cannonballs are at Connor's disposal: the standard ball, chains, and grapeshot. Chains are useful for damaging an enemy ship's sail while grapeshot is perfect for decimating her crew.
There are more dangers on the waters than just enemy ships, however, as mines can litter a passage or a nearby fort can rain fire down on you. Some missions may even have you boarding an enemy vessel to assassinate a Templar, so you should be prepared for anything. Prior to boarding any ship will require a battle, and Ubisoft is making sure the naval warfare is truly epic. Some of the battles will even be based on ones that actually took place, like the Battle of the Chesapeake. That one was pivotal moment in the final stages of the Revolutionary War, and it will be fascinating to see it play out in AC3.
Assassin's Creed III arrives on October 30 for the PS3 and 360, while the PC version will arrive on November 20.
