Marcin Zygadlo (MZM), Lead Programmer at Techland, created an internal weapon mod for Techland's Dead Island and now it is being realized as a full standalone first-person hack and slash game. When MZM showed the mod to the rest of the team, they saw it as "proof that chopping monsters frozen by magic spells using two-handed swords is brutally fun and addictive." Now, alongside MZM, a small team has formed to develop the game, which is currently being referred to as Project Hell. A few days ago, Techland launched the official Project Hell blog, called Sharpen Your Axes, to share the development process with the community. Today, Project Manager and Designer Marcin Kruczkiewicz (Kruq) has posted two updates: the first contains concept art of two environments, Swamps and Prison, while the second contains a concept image for an enemy called a Guardian.
Little else is known about the project at this time, but it certainly looks like a promising game if you're looking for something dark and gritty. As Kruq states:
Our main goal is to make a game we can all enjoy playing so don’t expect unicorns and fairies – we prefer breaking through hordes of undead minions only to slaughter their devilish and loathsome masters in a bloody boss-fight. To achieve that we’ll use our experience already gained in game development and enhanced technology from Dead Island. We believe that we can make something really unique and thrilling and share it with you. Keep your fingers crossed.
Wait a second – who wouldn't enjoy slaughtering unicorns and fairies? He may want to rethink that.
