A few days ago, independent developer IonFx, consisting of two brothers, Joe and Bob Johnson, officially unveiled its upcoming PC game Miasmata. In Miasmata, you play as Robert Hughes, a plague-stricken scientist searching for a cure on a remote island called Eden. Miasmata is being billed as "a game of survival, exploration and discovery." While the player must gather and research various plants and fungi, he is being stalked by a mysterious creature, programmed to use sight, sound, and smell to track the player. In addition, exploration itself is key, as you're not given a map to navigate the island. Instead, as you discover landmarks, you can triangulate your position to construct a map as you play.

Miasmata is being powered by a brand new engine named MILO, written from scratch by Joe. According to the official site, some of the engine's unique features include: voxel-based volumetric clouds, advanced water reflection and refraction, volumetric lightshafts and atmospheric scattering simulations. In the trailer, you can see examples of the lighting, cartography, researching, and of course, the mysterious cat-like creature. I have also included beta screenshots, courtesy of the official site. It certainly looks like Miasmata may provide a rather unique gameplay experience. The game is scheduled for release by the end of Q3 2012. Pricing and distribution have not been disclosed as of yet.
