It is a sad day in the gaming world, as Sony announced the closure of its Liverpool studio. The developer had been in existence for nearly 30 years and was most famous for the WipEout series, but now it is no more. Sony Liverpool was created in 1984 as Psygnosis and renamed in 1993 once Sony acquired it. Every single PlayStation system featured a launch title from the studio, with the most recent being WipEout 2048 for the PS Vita. Sony decided to close the studio down after a review found that changes needed to made in order to stay in an "increasingly competitive marketplace." Sony will instead focus its investment plans on studios with exciting new projects on the way, which should help it offer the best games to consumers.

The Sony Liverpool studio is also home to the quality assurance team for Europe, but that and others parts will remain operationl. Affected employees from the closure will try to be relocated as best as possible by Sony, so perhaps most of the team behind WipEout will find a new home.
