Bethesda Softworks has two very different RPGs under its belt that should please any fan. We have the sword and sorcery of The Elder Scrolls and the post-apocalyptic gunplay of Fallout, with the latter being a relatively new addition to the lineup. Bethesda has alternated the release of the major titles in each series (not counting the Obsidian-developed Fallout: New Vegas), and since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came out last November, it is high time for news to appear on Fallout 4. We pretty much just have rumors and hints to go on concerning the unannounced game, but the latest rumor could be interesting if true.
Fallout 4 will be set in Boston, Massachusetts, according to a Reddit user by the name of "Fallout4Boston." The user claims Bethesda has been "scoping out and researching" the city to presumably get as many locations as possible in the game. The studio also has strong ties to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which the Redditor says he/she may or may not work for in order to avoid being sued. The person is adamant that Fallout 4 is set in Boston, so it looks like we will just have to wait for some kind of official word from Bethesda on the setting.
Boston would be a likely choice for Fallout 4, especially considering a side quest in Fallout 3. The characters in that quest spoke of The Commonwealth and The Institute, which are the names of Massachusetts and the post-apocalyptic version of MIT, respectively. The Fallout universe says The Commonwealth is "a war-ravaged quagmire of violence and despair like much of the rest of the former United States, but it is also where the mysterious Institute is located." The Institute is home to scientists and advanced pre-war technology, which has enabled the scientists to create a true artificial intelligence. The AI enables The Institute to create life-like androids/synthetic humans, and is something we deal with in Fallout 3.
A Commonwealth organization known as The Railroad opposes the scientists of The Institute. The Railroad takes its name from The Underground Railroad and serves a similar purpose by rescuing the androids of The Institute. The Railroad opposes all kinds of slavery, but it mostly deals with slavery of synthetic humans. The Commonwealth Police have the Synth Retention Bureau that tracks down the escaped androids, and I imagine squares off with The Railroad on a consistent basis.
The setting for Fallout 4 is still a rumor for now, but the Boston location does have some weight thanks to the universe's history and mention in Fallout 3. We just have to hope the wait is not too long to see what Bethesda has in store for us.
