The tale of 38 Studios and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning looks to finally be over, as Rhode Island has gained control of the game's assets. United States Bankruptcy Judge Mary Walrath granted the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation and Bank of New York Mellon Trust Company control of the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning assets and any others owned by 38 Studios. The hope is for the two organizations to try and recoup the $75 million loan given to 38 Studios, most likely from a sale of the intellectual property. Former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling was given the loan to move his 38 Studios from Massachusetts to Rhode Island. He put up Amalur's assets, patents, software, and other property as collateral, which is now owned by Rhode Island.
This is more than likely the end for 38 Studios, but possibly not for Amalur. Depending on how quickly Rhode Island can sell the IP, we may get a patch and even a sequel for the game. EA expressed interest in getting an Amalur sequel made, so maybe the company will emerge as a potential buyer. Only time will tell.
