GameStop is pretty much the only place gamers in the U.S. think of when wanting to purchase a game in person. Sure, there are other retail options, but GameStop has over 4,000 stores in the country. PC gamers have to look elsewhere to buy games, but for console gamers GameStop is one of the better choices. There are differing opinions on GameStop though, which are not always positive. GameStop's CEO Paul Raines recently sat down with GameSpot to a rather lengthy interview that covered a wide variety of topics, including a rather interesting one. Raines says "hardcore gamers love GameStop" and can back up that statement with some facts. GameStop's PowerUp Rewards program has over 18 million memberships, which account for 35 to 40% of all video game sales in the US. Raines says the position of GameStop is "very strong" with its customers compared to the competition, which is something I am not sure everyone would agree with.
Raines also said the pre-owned business is essential to the gamer lifestyle, since games can be traded in for new ones on a never-ending cycle. That may be the lifestyle of a console gamer, but not so much for PC gamers.
