It was earlier this year when news came that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 had been canceled and the developer had reformed as Vostok Games. Vostok said progress on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was "frozen" because it could not secure the rights, and started work on F2P MMOFPS Survarium to continue the legacy of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Now it looks like a company was able to secure the rights to the series, although it may not be one you were expecting. According to a Ukranian blogger, Bethesda has secured the rights to the expanded S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe even though GSC Game World has not sold it. All of this is strictly a rumor for now until something more than an anonymous "trusted source" talks on the matter, so take it with a grain of salt. Still, when S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was canceled there was mention of a new IP rights owner, so maybe that was Bethesda or parent company ZeniMax Media.
If Bethesda or another company owns the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. rights, this could be good news as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 could be back on development. Bethesda has taken the "no comment" stance like every other company when responding to rumors, but hopefully we can get confirmation one way or the other. This would beg the question that if Bethesda does own the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. rights, does it really need another post-apocalyptic game to go with Fallout and RAGE?
