Unfortunately for the brave Russian soldiers of Company of Heroes 2, the freezing Soviet setting could prove to be just as deadly as Nazi gunfire. In real life WWII Russian infantrymen had to contend with extremely cold weather conditions, and Relic's Essence Engine aims to simulate those brutal -40 degree temperatures with ColdTech, providing a tremendous challenge for players. To give us an idea just how much of an impact the harsh weather will have on gameplay, Relic elaborates: "On winter maps, Infantry units exposed to the bitter cold will gradually freeze to death unless the player keeps them warm by building fires and garrisoning them in buildings." As if that wasn't punishing enough for the combatants, there's a few deadly surprises, too. "Dynamic blizzards will increase the effects of extreme cold, making it even more hazardous to leave infantry in the open." Foolishly crossing over frozen bodies of water can also be fatal to unsuspecting units, so Relic advises to tread these treacherous icy stretches with extreme care, unless you want your tanks submerged indefinitely. Check out the devastating weather effects with the screenshots below.
