When most games are finished and off to certification, the same development team will work on any downloadable content. Most recently we have seen this with Borderlands 2, but it looks like Ubisoft is taking a different approach with Assassin's Creed III. The game will not be out for another few months at least, but a leaked letter sent from Ubisoft to GameStop talks of a separate team to work on the DLC for Assassin's Creed III. The letter congratulated GameStop on hitting a pre-order quota, and then detailed the DLC plans by the "complementary team." Ubisoft speaks of episodic content for the "Game of the Year experience" that Assassin's Creed III will "undoubtedly" offer.
The letter says the complementary team will ensure the DLC for AC3 sets a new bar for quality, which more than likely means the game will receive a wealth of content for some time. That is backed up by the "Season Pass" mentioned in the letter, which will have pre-orders start for it to ensure owners of Assassin's Creed III receive all the DLC for one flat rate. It is kind of amazing to hear talk of DLC and a Season Pass for a game not even out yet, but Ubisoft may just want to keep up with its competition. It is unknown if the Season Pass will apply to PC gamers, but hopefully it does in order to deliver the same opportunity across all versions.
