Apple is planning to build a second data center in Maiden, North Carolina next to its existing data center. The new data center will be only 21,030 square feet, compared to the 500,000 square feet of the current data center. According to the Hickory Daily Record, the building plans seem to indicate that Apple may also add another massive data center at the site in the future. North Carolina has been a popular data center destination for Internet companies due to cheap and reliable power. Apple is in the process of building solar and fuel cell power into the Maiden site and plans to have the site operate on 100% clean energy at some point.
