Steam is currently in the middle of its annual Summer Sale and many games will be receiving discounts of 75% off or more. In a recent interview, David DeMartini of EA claimed that these sales "cheapen intellectual property." After stating that the Origin service won't be introducing sales of this magnitude, DeMartini said "The game makers work incredibly hard to make this intellectual property, and we're not trying to be Target. We're trying to be Nordstrom." Head of Business Development at Valve Jason Holtman recently had a chance to respond to these claims in an interview with Eurogamer. Holtman pointed out that "We do it with our own games. If we thought having a 75 per cent sale on Portal 2 would cheapen Portal 2, we wouldn't do it." In addition to the tremendous boost in sales that is seen for many games during the sale, Holtman also pointed out that pre-order sales and sales during the first three weeks of release are also up.
